Empowering children and adults with disabilities

Kaleen Deatherage

Executive Director

I work as Chief Executive Officer of the Mt. Hood Kiwanis Camp. I report to the camp’s Board of Directors, and am responsible for the camp’s consistent achievement of its mission and financial objectives.

Before coming to work for MHKC, I worked for 11 years at Oregon Partnership, a nonprofit that focused on drug and alcohol abuse prevention. I began as a Program Coordinator and over the decade with OP, I advanced to Program Director, Development Director and finally to Vice President. I had the opportunity to work with volunteer community groups, schools, state and local government, donors, and many elected leaders—all of whom helped me to develop and strengthen my leadership, nonprofit management, community building and presentation skills.

I am an Oregon girl—born and raised. I grew up in Washington County and got my finance and marketing degree from the University of Oregon.

Favorite camp activity: The Wednesday night dance. Love the costumes, the music, the dancing, and the “break down all your personal barriers, earnest good time” that is had by everyone!

Favorite camp song: The Bazooka Bubble Gum song.

Favorite camp food: Brandon’s chicken curry and teriyaki bowls.

My favorite thing about camp: My favorite thing about camp is the feeling like we own the world's biggest eraser. When people arrive, we erase their disabilities- all the things that make them feel different and instead we give them the gift of just being a person who gets to spend the week having fun and feeling empowered to try things they haven’t before. It’s truly awesome!

Team Woodsy or Team Smokey? I'm going with the owl, Team Woodsy.
